Bagnols-sur-Cèze: what to do at the weekend when you work there during the week

Many of those who stay in Bagnols-sur-Cèze are there for Marcoule, and leave on Friday. Those who stay for a weekend discover that the town is a good base: the Cèze valley to the north, the vineyards to the south, the Rhône to the east. Here is what to do, from a town-centre apartment such as Le Patio de la Cèze.

Saturday morning: the old town and the Cèze

The old town of Bagnols can be explored in an hour: the Place Mallet and its arcades, the lanes, and the Albert-André museum with its collection of modern painting. The main market is on Wednesday, but on Saturday the shops in the centre are open. Then head for the river: the banks of the Cèze can be followed on foot or by bike.

Saturday afternoon: La Roque-sur-Cèze and the Sautadet

Twenty minutes to the north, La Roque-sur-Cèze is one of the most beautiful villages in the Gard, perched above the river. Below, the Sautadet waterfalls have carved the limestone into potholes and channels. You admire them from the rocks; you swim downstream, never in the waterfalls. On the way back, stop at Goudargues, the "Venice of the Gard", for a drink by the canal.

Sunday: vineyards and villages to the south

South of Bagnols, the road runs through Tavel and Lirac, two Rhône appellations. Most of the wine cellars open on Sunday morning. Further on, Villeneuve-lès-Avignon and its charterhouse, or Avignon on the other side of the bridge, forty minutes away.

Rainy days

The Albert-André museum in Bagnols, the Musée de la Romanité in Nîmes forty minutes away, or simply a quiet day in the apartment, which is equipped for it.
